Haramura Folk Museum

This relocated residence of Mr. Yonenosuke Ito of Nakashinden, Haramura, is said to have been built around the end of the Edo period or the beginning of the Meiji period. The room layout is also typical for this region. In 2006, the kitchen and well were restored, the back porch and cupboards were repaired, and the environment of the site was restored in an attempt to recreate the rural lifestyle of the early 1950s. Inside the “Mate-no-Kura" (a play on the meaning of "wasteful"), tools and household goods used by the villagers in the past are on display, giving visitors a glimpse of the lifestyle of Haramura before it became a pension town. You can also tear up old kimonos and experience weaving them on a loom.
When the museum is closed, visitors are welcome to enter the premises and rest on the porch.

Open : July-September
(You can enter the premises even when the museum is closed)

Garyu Park

Garyu Park

The park is located at the Garyu Site, where house ruins, earthenware, and stone tools from the Middle and Late Jomon Periods (3000-5000 years ago) were discovered. The park has a thatched-roof Yakushi-Dō. Cherry blossom viewing can be enjoyed in spring amongst the many cherry trees are planted on site.
A group of megaliths from the village has been relocated in the park. As people have long believed that gods dwell in mountains, they referred to them sacred mountains or sacred peaks, and prayed to them. People prayed to the mountains to express their gratitude for the abundance of nature and to pray for protection against volcanic eruptions, floods, and wind storms. The thoughts of the villagers who prayed for a bountiful harvest and peace in their daily lives were entrusted to the monument, which has been handed down from generation to generation. It is said that the largest monument, the Amaterasu Jingu Monument, took 4,035 people to build (the population at that time was 697), which is an indication of the people's strong faith.
